There are over 10,000 local bakeries in Japan.
But why do we feature bread, not rice, the main staple food in Japan?
There are many foods which came from overseas but developed in original ways in Japan. For example, curry rice coming from India, cutlet, enjoyed as “Tonkatsu” in Japan, coming from Europe, Ramen coming from China, and so on. -
Bread culture evolved in the same way. As a result of eating bread on behalf of rice, “souzai pan” (deli bread) culture became popular in Japan. To name just a few, an-pan (bread filled with sweet red bean), kare-pan (curry-filled doughnut), yakisoba pan (hot dog filled with noodles not sausage), etc. Bread is sometimes enjoyed as a main dish in Japan, which makes the fillings even more varied. We can enjoy various ingredients by seasons and local regions.
